How long have you been using GeoMax equipment?

Metroscan have been using GeoMax instruments for seven years. I got in contact with Philip and company through their training courses and have built up a relationship from there. The team at Hitechniques are quick, efficient and love solving problems.

 

What made you decide to choose GeoMax equipment?

In our business, reliability and accuracy are a must, and it was proven that GeoMax equipment and X-PAD software could deliver all of this. Metroscan only uses GeoMax in our surveying fleet. GeoMax and Hitechniques helped with the integration of GNSS rovers / robotic total stations with our ground penetrating radars to provide constant GNSS data stream to radar data, which allows us to reference surveys to ITM coordinates.

Can you tell us a bit about some of the projects you’re working on?

We were contracted to work on pedestrian and cycle routes in Arklow and map the underground utilities for a redesign of the town's layout. The survey was necessary to enable the town’s planner to identify services within the road corridor that may need to be relocated for the purposes of their design project.

 

Which of the GeoMax solutions did you use during the project?

Along with using GeoMax GNSS solutions and total stations we use their X-PAD Ultimate surveying software. The newest GeoMax Zenith60 with X-PAD 365 cloud were used to provide the best accuracy in conjunction with ground penetrating radar.

You mentioned using the X-PAD surveying software. What in your opinion makes it different from others on the market?

X-PAD is great, allowing immediate upload of survey data from the field to the cloud. It is an easy to use, stable platform to deliver surveys on time and of high quality. Surveying and staking out points are important parts of the process of completing a project for many businesses in the AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) industry. For tarmac contractor having surveying equipment on hand means they can plan the work and quote the customer accordingly, ensure precision during the execution of the design and collect accurate data after completion of the project.

Hitechniques is currently supplying GNSS Rovers to four leading tarmac companies in Ireland. These companies wanted to upgrade to the next level in measurement and the GeoMax Zenith range with the X-PAD Ultimate Survey software was the direction we wanted to bring them. Speed is nothing without direction.

 

Main reasons for upgrading to GNSS Rovers for site works

When we look to improve a company’s workflow in measurement, we look at what’s drawing them back and what’s not working. Sometimes, it’s a flaw in the setting out when using tapes and lines, but on the other end, it’s the measurement and recording of As-Built drawings.

When you have a GNSS Rover there is no ambiguity in these two scenarios.

When the designer has drawn the site layout, it’s designed using software such as AutoCAD, and this is easily imported into X-PAD via email, cloud, or USB. Once the drawing is georeferenced (drawn in the correct coordinate system), it can be used directly for setting out in the field or road.

Once the works are completed, As-built drawings will be required, which is also easily achieved with the GNSS Rover from the Survey and exported into your PC software in several options, i.e. AutoCAD, X-PAD Fusion, SSC, LandXML.

With the measurement of surface areas (m2) recorded, it’s a straightforward calculation with tendered rates from the BOQ on what the costs are. These files can be overlaid on the original design drawing, and differences are easily seen from the proposed to what was constructed.

 

Volume Calculations

With the outline of the surface dressing, you can input a depth and show a volume of material to cross reference the calculations, and this is also useful to know what volume was used.

“Having bought the Zenith35 four years ago after one too many measurement disputes, we haven’t looked back.

The advantage to having done a site survey prior to the job starting and giving the site foreman the area, he needs to cover to the nearest square meter has been a huge advantage. With any large-scale job since we bought the Zenith35, we haven’t needed to have a joint measure with the client because the figures are independent of what both parties think, and a clear number can be factored to our Square Meter rate.

Lastly, it makes it easier to price jobs when you know the area. We can give an accurate estimate of what a job will cost from a site survey. We can do this as quickly as you would walk around the area.”

Drainage

Surface treatment and road design are what we see, but in some cases, the Tarmac contractor may have won the job based on their drainage package as well. Using a GNSS rover enables the contractor to bring in drainage drawings of storm gullies, road gullies, gully pots, linear drainage, kerb lines and flow direction. It's very simple to set out a job when you know when the location of the kerb lines are for footpath and road layouts. Proper setout determines the position of the gully pots, which can be positioned in the correct location. How often do we see a gully pot too far out or too far in under a kerb when we didn’t have a position after the marked line had been dug away?

All tools require proper care and routine maintenance for them to work correctly, and laser levels are no different. They are precision instruments and will give many years of service if cared for properly and serviced regularly. Here are some points to remember to extend your laser level's life and accuracy.

 

Proper storage

  • Your instrument should always be stored and transported in its specially designed carrying case, which, in turn, should never be used as a temporary tool kit.
  • Moist instruments should be wiped dry before being put away. Damage caused by condensation is one of the biggest problems we encounter in our service department. A wet or damp instrument should never be stored in this condition. See the below picture for damage to the main PCB board due to the device being stored while still wet.

Cleaning 

  • lf the instrument is equipped with any kind of optical glass on the outside, these windows must be treated with care. When cleaning the glass, remember to always rinse it first with clean water and then dry it with a soft, clean cloth. Never use anything abrasive to clean the glass. If the glass surface gets scratched, the scratches may distort the laser beam and lead to incorrect readings.
  • Never clean with pressurized air, since dust particles in the air can lead to a "sand blasting" effect
  • lt is essential to keep plugs and clamps for electrical connections dry and clean as well.

 

Batteries and charging

  • Aways use a fully charged battery or power adapter. Charge the battery when the laser is not in use. If you notice that the battery is overheating during the charging process, you unplug it. Give it time to cool (20 minutes or so should be enough) and then plug it back in. Non-rechargeable batteries should be disposed of immediately after they deteriorate.
  • You should never carry a laser instrument by its cable, and a laser instrument should never be connected to a car battery that is still connected to a car.
  • When your instrument is not in use we recommend that you store it with the batteries removed from the instrument and accessories e.g. detector and remote control. If the batteries leak when the instrument is not in use for a prolonged amount of time they can cause a lot of unnecessary damage

When we first contacted Hitechniques in September 2022 our plan was to take on the site surveying and set out ourselves at a higher level. Our biggest challenge was getting information to the design team from the site and back again. We needed a more efficient way to share information about existing structures to be tied into new build, dimensions, heights of existing building elements.

 

Why choose Hitechniques ?

We wanted a system that would cover everything from surveying the site and getting the design drawn on the area available, to overlaying back on the ground. It had to be reliable and tailored to our specific needs. Hitechniques was able to cater for this.

We booked into training with Philip after a consultation with Roch on what we needed to achieve. They asked us questions on our upcoming projects and they came up with a tailor made plan to match our needs. The course was a very good introduction with theory and practical knowledge of the robotic total station and surveying.

From there, we hired the unit to trial. Once we knew it was the right unit for us, we purchased the full kit. We knew we'll be using it in a majority of our work and Roch went through the different options and provided case studies on long term and short term use. Buying outright made sense both logistically and financially.

 

 

What instrument did you end up purchasing?

The Zoom 90 Robotic total station pack with X-PAD software was the setup recommended to us. It brought all we wanted into one programme and enabled us to use it on site and set out all our points from the designers AutoCAD file, which was crucial for us.

We were able to survey the site, record finish floor levels, survey existing structural steel members and their connections. We could relay all of this information back with speed and accuracy and trust our own drawings to set out the new elements.

The main benefit of having the Zoom 90 is that we can create our own workflow on site. Once we have the site control and our bearings set up we can revisit the site, set up using the control stations and pick up where we left off. The day of string lines and using tapes to set out our holding down bolts and building lines is now all wrapped up digitally in the Zoom 90 Robotic total station.

 

What would you tell people thinking of buying new surveying equipment?

We would highly recommend Hitechniques as a company where you can not only purchase state of the art equipment but to get back up and technical support from their experienced staff. Having that safety net makes a huge difference, especially at the beginning when you’re still getting used to the new equipment and software.

Construction and surveying instruments are often exposed to very harsh conditions. Even though they are made from rugged materials and manufactured to specific standards, they can still be damaged by elements, dropped accidentally or even get run over by a truck or excavator. They can also stop working due to some mechanical or electrical issue that occurs with age, or even missed software updates.

Replacing instruments like rotary lasers or surveying GNSS rovers can be expensive, so it’s always worth looking into repair options first. In most cases experienced technicians can get your equipment repaired and back to you with minimal downtime and at a significantly lower cost.

There are a few instances though, when repair is not a viable option. Each instrument coming to the Hitechniques Service Shop is inspected thoroughly, so our technicians can make a list of repairs needed and parts that will have to be replaced. When examining an instrument, they take into consideration three main factors that need to be thought-through, before deciding whether to go ahead with the repair: cost, effectiveness of the repair and the age of the equipment.

 

Cost

It’s our policy to send repair estimates to each customer before we start working on their equipment, to check if they are ok with the price. Generally we leave the final decision to the customer and proceed with the repair if that’s what they want to do. In some cases, though, the equipment is beyond economical repair and we recommend replacing it instead. This happens if the predicted cost exceeds 75% of the value of a new instrument.

One of our customers has five electronic theodolites they purchased from us. Unfortunately a few days ago one of the theodolite fell down while working and got damaged. The vertical disc of the instrument was completely broken, the chassis was badly jammed, and the vertical angle was no longer visible on the screen. The vertical drive was also not working and the tribrach was bent.

 

 

With that much damage the cost of repairs would have been significant and exceeding the 75% of a new instrument’s value. Our technician suggested purchasing a new instrument and offered the customer a discount, if they were to buy from our store. The customer agreed to this offer and purchased a new device from us.

 

Effectiveness

Surveying and measuring instruments are complex machines built to deliver specific results. They are used by professionals relying on their accuracy and have to perform perfectly. Serious damage to the internal mechanism or electronic components can compromise the instrument’s ability to take accurate measurements.

While most parts can be fixed or replaced, sometimes it’s not possible to assure the same level of efficacy. In such cases it’s best to replace the instrument to avoid costly mistakes.

 

Age of the instrument

Not every professional needs the latest technology and some hold on to their trusty GNSS receivers or laser levels for many years. There’s nothing wrong with that and it’s great to see so many instruments performing outstandingly for long periods of time. Unfortunately, when such instruments are in need of repair, it can be difficult to find replacement for damaged or worn out parts.

 

Some final thoughts

When it comes to surveying and measuring instruments, the environmentally friendly “repair instead of replace” approach isn’t always a viable option. Technology becomes obsolete quicker, making repairs harder and more expensive because of complexity of work and poor availability of parts. It also puts more pressure on users to upgrade their equipment in order to stay ahead of the competition. Each case needs to be assessed individually before a decision is made, to assure it makes sense financially and is the best course of action for you and your business.
